Scope

In 2006, as part of Pasadena’s Green City Action plan, Anne Garbarine and Associates teamed with project partners to transform 45 Eureka into a brighter and warmer environment. Using LEED Certified finish materials, we created a unique design that is not only beautiful, but environmentally sustainable. The project team worked to create a sustainable design selecting building materials that were recycled, recyclable or and/or rapidly renewable. Responsible use of materials began by re-using the building shell; adding new lumber from certified forests for floors and doors, recycled content aluminum shades, screens and framing for glass walls, wheat-straw cabinets, sunflower board cabinets, recycled bottle toilet partitions, carpet, ceiling tiles and insulation.

The flat-cinder-block entrance wall was transformed into a lobby by carving out a chunk and creating a path of mixed materials. Horizontal elements overhead and a glass façade were placed to welcome visitors to a space designed to embrace a healthy work-space for the occupants. The team focused considerable attention on daylighting to save energy costs. The existing building was dark and cavernous, so AG&A designed two large open-air atriums with courtyards to create a flow of natural light throughout the tenant and common areas of the facility. As a result, at least 75% of the interior now enjoys daylighting. Serene indoor garden spaces used for small meetings and break areas, exterior views and supplemental illumination, provide a pleasant work environment to address the human factors in generating the highly productive work place that resulted.
